How to Fix a Leaking Main Water Shut-off Valve

If you’ve noticed that your main water shut-off valve is dripping, it could be a sign of a big – but easily fixable – plumbing issue.

If you have an old style gate or globe valve , they are prone to leaking , corrosion and damage , which is an easy way to figure out if that’s what’s causing the leaking.

We recommend replacing the gate valve with a ball valve, which lasts longer and is less likely to leak.

Before replacing the valve, try these two things first to try and stop the leak:

Tighten the packing nut with a wrench
Replace valve stem packing material or washer
We’ll walk you through each of these steps below.

Tighten the packing nut

The packing nut makes a watertight seal where the valve stem meets the water line. So, if there is a leak at the valve stem, it probably means the valve is not turned all the way off.

The first thing you should do to stop the leak is to tighten the packing nut.

To tighten the packing nut:

Turn the packing nut ¼ turn using a wrench
Check for leaks
If the valve is still dripping, try turning the packing nut tighter and check again

If the leaking hasn’t stopped, there’s another option.

Replace the packing material under the packing nut

Tools you’ll need:

A wrench
Replacement packing material (can be found at most hardware stores)
When you tighten the packing nut on your main water shut-off valve, it binds down the packing material against the washer to stop any water from getting through. Over time, though, this packing material can form a solid seal because it hardens or disintegrates, which causes the valve to leak. When this happens, you’ll have to replace the packing material by following these steps:
Shut off the water from the street at your meter box (turn the valve next to the meter counterclockwise)
Turn on a faucet in your house to let out all the water that’s inside your water line
Remove the shut-off valve handle
Remove the packing nut and any old packing (if it’s made of Teflon™or other fibers, a toothpick can be used to pull it out).
If you see a rubber gasket instead of Teflon™, you’ll have to remove the rubber gasket completely. Since you’ll need to make sure the new washer is the same size as the old one, your best bet is to remove the washer and take it with you to a hardware store so you buy the correct size.
Wrap the new packing around the stem 3 times counterclockwise or just replace the rubber washer
Screw the packing nut back on, making sure the packing fits tightly into the packing nut. Be careful not to overtighten the packing nut
Turn the water back on and check for any leaks

Potential Issues With Your Toilet and How to Fix Them

If there’s one thing that all households have in common, it’s toilet problems. Just when you think things are going well, a plumbing issue arises and more often than not, the culprit is the toilet. There is always going to be a time when you need to know how to fix toilet issues.

Instead of letting anxiety boil over and ruin your day, take a few deep breaths—preferably outside of the bathroom—and get ready to tackle the problem head on. Here are the most common potential issues with your toilet and some ways how to fix toilet problems:

The Toilet is Loose

If you’ve ever sat down to use the toilet and felt it wobble back and forth, you know how startling it can be. Loose toilets should be taken care of immediately, even if there aren’t any leaks. This is because eventually, it will leak (see the 2 nd example below) and that leads to rotting and mold.

Often some simple caulking can do the trick, but make sure it’s the anti-mold type used for bather and kitchen. If the wobble is large toilet shims (available at any hardware store) may be necessary. If your efforts to stop the wobble are unsuccessful, call in a professional to avoid costly repairs down the road.

The Toilet is Leaking Water

Nothing’s worse than heading into the bathroom and stepping in a large puddle of water. Is it from the shower? The sink? Did someone miss the toilet? Stray water in the bathroom is never appealing, but the source could be a leaky base or a leaky tank or supply lines on your toilet.

When you use the toilet, if you hear any sort of squishing or swishing sounds, you likely have a leaky base, even if the toilet itself doesn’t move (like it does in the 1 st example).

A leaky base can happen due to failing or degrading seals around your toilet’s base. A leak can occur even if the toilet itself does not move or wobble. Toilets leaking at the base need to be taken care of as soon as possible to avoid major damage to your home. Unless you are experienced with toilet removals and wax seal replacement it would be a good idea to give your plumber a call to investigate and replace the wax seal if needed.

Check the full length of the supply line between the angel stop in the wall to the base of the toilet tank for leaks. Also check around the bottom of the tank including both bolts connecting the tank to the toilet. Simply tightening may solve the problem, otherwise replacement of gaskets, seal or supply line may be required. An experienced handyman or plumbing professional is recommended for this work if your DIY efforts fail to stop the leaking.

The Toilet Won’t Stop Running Water

You know that annoying sound that’s heard from every inch of your house? Like someone left the sink on somewhere? If you keep hearing the sound of running water, check your toilet. Sometimes all it takes is a little jiggle of the handle to stop the water running, but if it doesn’t stop, you likely have a bigger problem. Keep in mind that leaking water can add substantial dollars to your monthly water bill, so a timely fix is important.

A leaky toilet tank flapper or faulty fill valve is most often the culprit for a toilet running periodically on its own. Replacement of a flapper and/or fill valve is a task that anyone with modest handyman skills can accomplish. Pick up a high quality parts at your local hardware store and refer to toilet flapper/fill valve installation videos available on YouTube for help. If replacing the flapper and/or fill valve does not solve the problem then time to call in a professional.

The Toilet Won’t Flush Properly

If it becomes apparent that with everything maintained and functioning your toilet just will not flush properly then it may be time to go shopping. Chronic flushing problems are usually the result of older toilets and unless you want to keep gambling on whether or not the bowl will empty, you may need a new toilet.

Be cautious when considering a “low water use” model for a new toilet because flushing performance is greatly influenced by the amount of water used and often the small amount of water saved with a higher water use efficiency is not worth the head aches associated with poor flushing, aka if you have to flush multiple times to get the job done, where is the water savings? Consult a plumbing professional for help.

The Toilet is Clogged

We’ve all experienced the unpleasantness of a clogged toilet. Usually, it’s an easy fix. Just grab a plunger and get to work. However, if you find that a plunger isn’t fixing the clog, or if you experience consistent bouts of clogging, you may have a deeper problem.

Rather than simple waste buildup, there is a high probability that you have an accumulation of non-degradable waste in your pipes. If an experienced handyman you may try using a plumbing snake on your own, otherwise it is best to bring in a plumbing professional to make sure everything is taken care of properly.

Removing P-Traps

A p-trap is that curved pipe that you see beneath any sink. P-traps are designed to prevent the backflow of sewer gases from passing into the home. A P-trap can trap debris that has drained from the sink, which can restrict the flow from the sink. So, why is removing P-traps important?

Because this bit of plumbing ingenuity does indeed trap items, sometimes you need to remove P-traps in order to dislodge whatever is clogging up the pipe. If the P-trap becomes only slightly clogged, then you will have slow drainage in the sink. Luckily, the steps needed to remove P-traps are easy to follow for most homeowners.

In order to remove P-traps, you should only need a rag and a bowl. First, though, clear out everything from underneath the sink so you have better access to the plumbing. If you have plastic plumbing (PVC), then don’t use a pipe wrench. You should be able to use a rag to gain leverage on the P-trap coupling nut (the piece that connects one piece of pipe to another). Grip the pipe with your other hand so you don’t snap the pipe. Turn the nut counterclockwise until it’s loose, then turn the other coupling nut and remove the P-trap. Make sure to keep the bowl underneath the P-trap to catch the water that will escape from the pipe.

Clean the P-trap thoroughly with a large bottle brush and do the same to each end of the pipe that the P-trap connects to. A hose end sprayer outside can also work well for cleaning. The steps to replace P-traps are just as easy as when you remove P-traps, though sometimes it can be a bit tricky to line up the threads on the couplings at first. Once re-connected, run some water in the sink to see if cleaning the P-trap resolved your slow drainage problem and to make sure your connections aren’t leaking. If you still have issues, contact a reputable plumber to help resolve the issue.

Why do you need a whole house water filter system ? Two very important reasons: First, to remove the residual chlorine contained in your water that is added at the municipal treatment plants to prevent growth of disease-producing micro-organisms, which include bacteria, viruses, and parasites. And secondly, to remove harmful chemicals, residual pharmaceuticals, pesticides, herbicides, trihalomethanes resulting from chlorination, and volatile organic compounds contained in your water due to industrial and agricultural activities that have added these pollutants to our water supply. The combination of unusually warm temperatures and the surface water supplies (river and lake water) treated for our drinking water increases the use of chlorine as a disinfectant in the Phoenix area. The numerous EPA Superfund Sites located in the Phoenix area where cleanup of contaminated groundwater is ongoing attests to the fact that there are man-made contaminants in our water supplies.

So why the concern about chlorine in my water?

Chlorine has a strong chemical odor, causes skin and eye irritation, deteriorates the fabric in our clothing, and accelerates corrosion in our faucets and fixtures. Chlorine can also greatly reduce the useful life of a water softening system by degrading the media.

So will my water make me sick?

Typically, the contaminant levels in municipal water are not high enough to cause immediate sickness, but are more likely to cause chronic health effects. This means effects that occur long after repeated exposure to small amounts of a contaminant.

What does a whole house water filter system do?

A whole house filtration system provides you with the extra protection you need at every water fixture in your home. Contaminants can be absorbed through the skin and inhaled from our lungs, so it is extremely important to be protected throughout the entire home. If you have no special water contaminant issues, then a whole house filtration system with activated carbon is recommended for general, multi-purpose, whole house purification. What types of filters are used?

Filter carbon is a manufactured product. Though it is sometimes erroneously called charcoal, it is actually a carbon material that has been treated by steam and high temperature in the absence of oxygen. Coconut shell carbon is becoming popular not only because it is made from a renewable resource but also because it produces very good tasting water and is particularly good at trihalomethane removal.

Carbon filters remove chemicals by the process of adsorption (as opposed to ab sorption). Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary defines adsorption as “the adhesion in a thin layer of molecules to the surfaces of solid bodies in which they are in contact.” Carbon attracts certain chemicals at the molecular level in much the same way that a magnet attracts and holds metal filings. When the surfaces are full, the filter media must be discarded and replaced.

A single pound of granular activated carbon has a filtering surface area equivalent to 125 acres! It is the best known treatment for organic chemicals, VOCs, pesticides, herbicides, and chlorine and its by-products. It is also an unchallenged taste-and-odor improver.

Water Heater Maintenance Tips To Double The Life Span

Water heater maintenance can extend the life span of this important appliance. In Arizona, the life span of a typical electric tank style water heater is 6 to 10 years. Gas water heaters tend to have even shorter life spans. The life expectancy of your water heater will depend on the quality of your water, design of the unit, how well it has been installed, and whether any water heater maintenance is performed.

Today, I want to introduce you to two maintenance procedures that you can perform that is guaranteed to at least double the life of your water heater.

Prevent Sediment Buildup by Regularly Flushing the Tank

Sediment buildup in the bottom of your water heater tank can reduce the energy efficiency of heating the water because you are heating the sediment along with the water. In gas water heaters, the sediment at the bottom of the tank can form a layer of insulation between the burner and the water. The sediment slows down the heat transfer from the burner to the water, causing the tank to be overheated, weakening the steel and the glass lining. In electric water heaters, the lower element can get buried in sediment, which can cause it to work far too hard and consequently burn out.

Keeping your water heater in good condition for years to come is simple. By performing regular water heater maintenance that includes flushing sediment buildup from the interior, you can help prevent potentially costly repairs or damage that can destroy the appliance entirely. In Arizona, flushing at least once per year is recommended and every six months if you have very hard water.

Reduce Tank Corrosion by Replacing the Anode Rod

Most water heater tanks are steel with a thin glass lining to protect the metal from corrosion. Every lining will have pin holes and cracks that eventually lead to a leaking tank. A crucial line of defense against rust or corrosion in the tank is a long metal “anode rod” that attracts corrosive elements in the water. The rod is composed of magnesium or an aluminum alloy. When the rod itself becomes so corroded and depleted that it can no longer do its job, the tank soon rusts out, leaks, and needs replacement. However, if you replace your water heater anode rod before it fails, about every three years, you can easily double the life of your water heater.

The anode rod can be a stand-alone unit visible as a hex head on top of the tank or the more common style is located under the hot water outlet nipple as shown on the right.

Buy a new anode rod at a home center or online for about $40. Install a flexible rod if you have less than 44 in. of clearance above your heater.

The best time to replace the anode rod is during the tank flushing after the tank is empty.

Removal of the nipple style anode rod will require a pipe wrench and possibly a nipple extractor as shown in the illustration below. Be sure to use Teflon tape sealant on the threads when installing the new anode rod.

Reverse Osmosis vs. Water Distillation

We need water to survive. Water makes up approximately 70% of the human body; blood is 93% water and muscles are about 75% water. Reverse osmosis and distillation are the most common and most effective water purification methods used to make safe drinking water, so what are the differences between reverse osmosis and distilled water? Both processes require the use of a carbon filter. Beyond that, they go through very different processes.

With a combination of pressurized water through a thin-film semi-permeable membrane and carbon filters, the contaminant removal efficiency of typical contaminants found in municipal water is between 90% and 95%. However, the removal efficiency tends to degrade over time. Removal of pathogens (harmful microorganisms: i.e., bacteria and viruses) is effective with RO treatment, but is not recommended because membrane deterioration can occur, resulting in pinholes in the RO membrane, and the o-rings are not designed to prevent the migration of pathogens. Thorough attention must be paid to maintaining reverse osmosis water filtration systems.

Typically, RO systems installed in homes require strong water pressure and waste four to twenty gallons of water for every gallon purified. Ultra-violet (UV) disinfection lamps that provide protection from pathogens are available for home RO systems but are rarely installed.

It should be noted that home RO systems are not nearly as effective at contaminant removal as commercial RO systems used to produce bottled drinking water. Commercial RO systems use higher grade equipment at higher pressures and always include UV disinfection in the process.

Distillation exactly duplicates Mother Nature’s hydrologic cycle, passing water over heated coils, causing water vaporization that destroys pathogens and leaves contaminants behind. The resulting steam transfers to a cooling chamber and is then condensed back into water that is 99.9% free of any contaminants. To assure the purest water achievable, activated carbon filters are used both before and after distillation as an additional barrier to contaminants

Roots in Sewer Line Solutions

There are a number of causes for blockage of sewer pipes due to roots in sewer line. When there is periodic reoccurrence of sewer pipe clogging, then it pays to invest in a sewer camera survey that produces a recorded video of the pipeline, which is used to determine the cause of the clogging. With a detailed diagnosis of the problem, then you can make an informed decision on the necessary steps to remedy the cause.

The most common cause for blockage occurs when water escaping from a sewer pipe, combined with the water seeking roots from a nearby tree, results in invasive growth of a root mass that eventually clogs the sewer pipe. Any crack or fissure in a sewer line sends signals to tree roots that they’ll follow. Tendrils resembling spider webs creep down into the cracks and send out roots, which have the potential to grow as large as the sewer line itself.

Invasive tree roots can create major headaches in sewer lines. To address this issue, consider these four potential remedies to unclog or clean sewer lines with root growth:
1.

Cut Tree Roots Mechanically

The most common technique to get rid of roots in sewer lines is to use a mechanical auger. A powered sewer auger is sent down a sewer line with a rotating spiral head. The head has teeth on it much like a reciprocating saw blade. The rotating action cuts the roots, but many remain within the sewer line.

This clears the roots from the sewer line, but doesn’t solve the problem — the roots will grow back.

Chemical Tree Root Removal

After mechanically removing the root mass, use a chemical to kill off the root structure so it doesn’t grow back. Most often recommended is copper sulfate that creates a poison zone within the soil outside the pipe. Roots can’t get into the pipe, and they die trying.

Most professionals prefer a copper sulfate product with a foaming agent like RootX or Roebic FRK Foaming Root Killer. Copper sulfate crystals sit on the bottom of the pipe. They do not coat the root masses that come down from the top of the pipe like fingers from a web. That’s basically how the roots grow in. The foaming root destroyers create a foam inside the pipe that coats the entire interior circumference of the pipe.

Kill Tree Roots in Sewer Lines with a Hydro Jetter

An effective, but more expensive, way of clearing sewer lines is with a hydro jetter. This machine uses a pump and water that produces up to 4000 PSI through a hose with a specialty jetted tip that cuts through clogging materials in the sewer pipe, including tree roots. After the hydro jetter does its job, the sewer line can be flushed with a foaming chemical to kill any roots still present.

Dig Up Invasive Tree Roots

Sometimes roots in sewer lines can’t be cleaned or cleared if it’s been damaged too badly. Excavation and replacement of the damaged section of pipe then becomes necessary. Determining the extent of the homeowner’s responsibility for the sewer pipe replacement work will be an important consideration.

How did I improve my health? It seems there are not many certainties in life, but here is one surefire tip that works! It sounds simple, but I know from my own experience that it will take some personal commitment and discipline to accomplish. And it will be worth it.

I have a friend, Jess Maney, founder of Y-Fit Fitness Training , who has spent 20 years studying the science of the human body and formulating programs for his clients that get results. He is often asked by his clients, “How do I improve my health?” I was intrigued when Jess said that after he explains the strength training and nutrition aspects of his program for a new client, he then says, “Now what I am going to tell you to do next is so important that if you don’t do it, none of the rest of this is going to matter.” My first thought was, “Wow, this must be critical, what could it be?” His answer was to drink the amount of water he assigns you each and every day. His water assignment varies according to individual circumstances, but is typically about 60 percent of body weight in pounds converted to ounces. For a person weighing 180 lbs, that would translate into 108 ounces of water per day.

Medical and health professionals agree that the benefits of drinking enough water daily include:

Any wholesome water consumed in enough quantity on a daily basis will produce the benefits listed above, but there are other health benefits that will accrue over time depending on the purity of the water you drink. Based on my 30 years of involvement as an environmental engineering consultant tasked with with providing and protecting our water supplies, I can say with a high degree of confidence that any source of naturally occurring water – whether from a spring high up in the mountains or a municipal water treatment plant in the valley – has the potential for producing negative health consequences over time. Further, any minerals contained in naturally occurring water that might be beneficial are more than overshadowed by the risks of unhealthful contamination. Bottom line is the cleaner and more pure the water, the better.

To keep it simple, I have listed different types of water below and varied the font size to indicate the degree of preference for healthy, pure water. The larger the font, the more pure and healthy the water:

Distilled Water

(all dissolved constituents removed and sanitized through distillation and carbon filtration; bottled generic, Smartwater, Function Water, Vapor Water or from a steam distillation unit installed in your home)

Bottled Purified Water

(nearly all dissolved constituents removed and sanitized; typically performed with factory quality reverse osmosis and UV disinfectant equipment; bottled Pure Life, Aquafina, Dasani, etc., also

available in bulk from water stores)
(some dissolved constituents removed, combination of RO filters and carbon filters typically installed under the kitchen sink; no sanitizing unless UV light installed; performance degrades over time and lack of maintenance can produce a hazard)

Bottled Spring Water

(lower incidence of man-made contaminants; spring water or pumped groundwater; Arrowhead, Geyser, Fiji, Evian, Glacial, Volvic, etc.)

Tap Water

(filtered for particulates and sanitized with chemicals added for disinfection purposes; residual disinfectants and disinfection by-products can be harmful; subject to contamination from man-made chemicals and residual pharmaceuticals)

QUICK! Somebody shut off the water.

Do you know how to shut off the water? In case of a water leak emergency, that somebody could be you! Can you see yourself doing what it takes to get the water turned off in a hurry?

ANGLE STOPS

Under every sink there are shutoff valves for hot and cold water; and behind every toilet is a shutoff valve. If the leak appears to be coming from under the sink or in the vicinity of the toilet, then these shutoff valves, commonly referred to as “angle stops”, would be the best place to start in order to stop a leak in a hurry.

MAIN SHUT-OFF VALVE

In case of a major water leaking emergency, your main shut off valve comes in to play to shut off the water to your home. This valve is typically located after the city water meter, usually near the front and sometimes the side of your home. This valve is typically found just below a hose bib. In the case of a catastrophic leak, such as a burst supply pipeline, the minutes saved in shutting off the water can drastically reduce the resulting water damage inside the home.

VALVES NEED TO BE OPERABLE

To shut off the water, you need a valve that is operable. The bad news is that these valves don’t always work. Over time, valves can become inoperable due to internal corrosion and hard water deposits. There are two types of valves: the old style gate valve that takes several turns of the handle to shut off and the more modern ball valve style that takes one-quarter turn to be off. The old style gate valves are more prone to problems, so whenever you replace a valve, use the quarter-turn ball valve style.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO BE PREPARED?

Become familiar with the locations of the valves in your home. If you need help, doing a Google search using key phrases such as “water main valves” or “angle stop valves” can be a great source of further information to identify the location and function of water valves in your home.

Check the operation of your valves to make sure they work. If the valve does not turn with a moderate amount of pressure, then it is probably inoperable and will need to be replaced.

One other tip: If an angle stop valve needs to be replaced, it is generally a good idea to replace the supply line attached to the valve. The fittings on supply lines corrode and can leak over time.

Changing A Bathroom Faucet Made Easy

With the holidays right around the corner, you may be in for some company. Make sure your bathroom faucet is up to the task. Whether it just needs a quick and easy update, or you have an issue, replacing it is a great way to enhance the look of your bathroom. JB Water can help.

First, you need to choose the faucet. Make sure you take note of your current faucet so that you choose the right type. There may be one hole in your counter top, or there may be three. If you’re just replacing the faucet, make sure you choose the same kind. Now you’re ready to get started.

An important precaution before beginning any plumbing project is to find the main shut off valve to your home and make sure it is in good working order.

Remove the old faucet

1. Turn off the water supply. The valves are typically under the sink. It is not uncommon for very old valves to break or begin leaking when you attempt to turn them off. Should anything go wrong, you will want to close the main shut off valve in a hurry.

2. Disconnect the supply lines from the faucet. Use a basin wrench if you can’t reach the connections with your hands.

3. Disconnect the sink drain lift rod, and then remove the nuts from under the faucet.

Remove the Drain

1. Unscrew the slip nut on the P-trap. Put a bucket underneath to catch water in the trap.

2. Disconnect the drain flange from the tailpiece. It should unscrew.

3. Clean around the old drain and faucet holes. Mineral spirits can help remove old silicone sealant.

Install the New Faucet

1. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for specific installation instructions. Most installations begin with installing the gasket on the bottom of the faucet. Some require sealant or plumber’s putty. Then put the faucet through the mounting holes in the sink and tighten the mounting nuts.

2. Not all faucets come pre-assembled so you might have to attach the handles. It’s easy. Slip the guide ring onto the bottom of the handle, position it on the faucet base, and secure with the setscrew. A setscrew is the tiny screw on the underside of the handle. Your faucet probably came with a hex wrench to tighten it.

3. Next, move on to the drain. Screw the nut all the way down on the drain body and push the gasket over it. Some gaskets are threaded and simply screw into place.

4. Apply just a little bit of silicone (some manufacturers recommend plumber’s putty) under the flange. Position the drain body on the bottom of the sink — making sure the pivot hole is facing the back — and screw the flange on from the top side.

5. Underneath, tighten the nut and gasket. On the top, use mineral spirits to clean up any excess silicone.

6. Install the drain rod next. Unscrew the pivot nut on the drain body, insert the horizontal rod through the hole in the stopper, and replace the nut. Push the horizontal rod down and secure the lift rod to the strap with the screw. Test the lift rod.

7. Reconnect the supply lines from the faucet to the hot and cold water shutoff valves. Be careful not to over-tighten the connecting nuts. Moderate pressure is all that is necessary.

8. Flush the faucet by removing the aerator. This gets rid of debris or sediment in the faucet. Some faucets include a handy little tool to unscrew the aerator. When you’re done, keep it inside your vanity or with the rest of your tools. Turn on the hot and cold water for about a minute. Check all the connections for leaks and re-tighten if necessary. Screw the aerator back on and you’re done.

ALERT: Is My Water Safe To Drink?

Think your water is safe to drink? The primary threat to health from waterborne sources comes from pathogenic organisms (protozoa, bacteria, and viruses). A 2006 study estimated that 4 to 12 million cases of gastrointestinal illness annually in the US is due to pathogens in public water systems and more than 800,000 deaths annually are attributed to unsafe water supplies and lack of sanitation and hygiene. Generally, public water systems provide excellent protection from pathogens due to water treatment by sedimentation, filtration, and/or disinfection. Municipal water treatment is similar to the way your swimming pool works: Filter out the “floaties” and suspended matter so the water is clear, and disinfect to protect against harmful bacteria, viruses, and algae. Many pool owners have even switched to salt-based pool disinfection systems to reduce the hazards of chlorination.

Municipal water systems usually (around 99% of the time) do not do anything to remove harmful man-made chemicals or naturally occurring contaminates (arsenic, lead, mercury, etc.) from the water they supply. Typically, municipal treatment introduces contaminates into our drinking water during the disinfection step of treatment. The recent Water Quality Notices by the Town of Gilbert alerted residents to excessive Total Trihalomethanes (TTHMs) in the water supply, which are disinfection by-products created by chlorination in the treatment process.

The presence of man-made chemicals and residual pharmaceuticals in our water supplies in Arizona is well documented and is evidenced by the numerous groundwater contamination remediation sites located in the valley and around the state. It is important to note that while the EPA regulates over 50 man made organic chemicals, there are more than 100 chemicals on the EPA’s contaminant candidate list that are recognized as harmful, but not currently regulated, which means no municipal water supply facilities are even looking for them.

Not convinced we have a problem with our drinking water? Then consider the facts presented in a 2016 EPA Health Advisory: An estimated 16.5 million Americans are drinking water contaminated with fluorinated organic chemicals (PFOA and PFOS) in specific parts of the US, including the Phoenix Metro area. At concentrations as low as 70 parts per trillion, this may result in adverse health effects (cancer, obesity, hormonal disruption, and immune system impacts). Other than the EPA asking eight major companies to phase out production of these chemicals, nothing has been done to reduce this real threat to our health.

Who Is Responsible For Fixing The Sewer Lines To Your House?

If you’re suddenly faced with a nasty (and expensive) sewer issue, wondering who’s actually responsible for sewer line repairs, here’s what you need to know.

Every city has slight differences to this rule but most cities in Arizona, state that homeowners are responsible for any maintenance, repairs or work needed on the sewer lateral lines .

The sewer lateral lines (otherwise known as private laterals) are the part of the sewer line that runs from your house and connects to the sewer main in the street. If you have an area adjacent to your home that your Home Owners Association (HOA) maintains, and that part of your sewer line is damaged due to root growth or other issues, the HOA may be responsible for that section. The city is only responsible for the sewer lines that are not on your property or are part of a right of way or easement.

For example, the City of Phoenix Municipal Code 28-5(a) states that…

The property owner shall be responsible for the cleaning, unstopping, maintenance and repair of the building connection piping serving the owner’s property from the home or building to the public sewer line, except for repair or replacement of damaged or broken piping in the public right-of-way serving a single-family or duplex property.

Recreation Center and the Southeast Regional Library to install updated plumbing that will save the town thousands of gallons of water per year, as well as thousands of dollars!

At Freestone Recreation Center and Southeast Regional Library, some urinals were converted to waterless, while other urinals in the building now flush at 0.5 gallons per flush, which cuts their water use in half. In all the restrooms, green handles now mean toilet flushing comes with some options. Flush up for liquids and a 1.0 gallon flush. Flush down for solids and a full 1.6 gallon flush. All hand washing sinks in both buildings were equipped with 0.5 gallon per minute faucet aerators.

The Rec Center also has new, high efficiency shower heads installed in the lockers rooms, to the rave reviews of patrons. The showers will now use 1.5 gallons per minute, compared to the old 2.5 gallons per minute.

The upgrades are expected to save Gilbert hundreds of thousands of gallons of water a year. May is Water Safety Month. Because over 100,000 people drown each year worldwide, it’s best to make sure you are doing everything you can so that your family and loved ones are safe around water. Keeping an eye on kids who are around water is always advised, but remember that even older kids and adults drown , too, so stay vigilant and assign someone to keep an eye on everyone at pool parties and anytime you’re around water.

Even water that’s spilled on floors or the ground can cause someone to slip and fall . Head injuries and limbs breaking due to falls can lead to serious complications. Be careful when walking on smooth surfaces if there is a possibility of any liquid being present. Older people are particularly susceptible to broken hips and other bones and it often takes them longer to recover.

Drinking plenty of water, especially as the weather warms up, is an important part of staying healthy, too. Some say that waiting until you’re thirsty to drink is waiting too long. Drink water often, all day long . Drink an 8 ounce glass before going to bed and another upon waking. The American Journal of Epidemiology found that drinking more water reduced the risk of heart attack by a significant amount . You’ll likely find that drinking a full glass of water before each meal helps curb your appetite , helping with weight loss if you are hoping to lose a few pounds.

Drinking safe water is key , of course. You can buy filtered water, though that gets expensive and can be a chore to have to carry all the bottles. Bottled water is also not great on a tight budget and the manufacture of the bottles themselves holds controversy because of the environmental consequences. Having delicious purified water straight from the tap is the most convenient. Heart disease is currently the leading cause of death in the United States . A study in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that adult males who drank five or more glasses of water had only a 46% chance of having a fatal heart attack, and adult females had only a 59% risk, compared to adults who drank two or fewer glasses of water every day.

Those who drank five or more 8-ounce glasses of water a day were less likely to die from a heart attack than those who drank fewer than two glasses a day. And experts stress that you should not rely on tea or coffee to get your water quota. These beverages can raise blood viscosity, which is the thickness and stickiness of blood. Higher blood viscosity can make it harder for blood to flow and can lead to heart disease and heart attacks. Heart attacks occur more frequently in the morning , when your blood is thicker because of water loss while you’re sleeping, so drink a glass of water before you climb into bed and another when you get up .

Your body is made up of about 83% water. Your brain and muscles are about 75% water, and even your bones are about 22% water. Did you hear that more than 3 million gallons (11.3 million liters) of acid mine waste was accidentally released from the century-old Gold King mine near Silverton, Colorado? An EPA crew attempted to stem seepage already occurring at the site when sludge was accidently released August 5 th , gushing into the Cement Creek stream, just below the site. The contaminated water eventually made its way to the Colorado River. The Phoenix Valley gets about half of their water from the Colorado River, so we should be worried about water contamination in Arizona.

There are about 100,000 old mines all over Arizona that have the potential to release the same contaminates as the one from Colorado. In fact, there were two minor incidents just last year. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) routinely conducts mitigation projects using private contractors to reduce the hazards from mine waste at abandoned mines. But these kinds of accidents happen all the time.

The most important part of this process is, of course, having plenty of water and the right kind of water available. Some of the best water you can possibly drink is steam distilled. This has shown to have many more benefits than tap, mineral, fluoridated or spring water. The logic is simple. Water sources other than steam distilled are treated to kill impurities, then substances like chlorine, carbon and aluminum sulfate are added to adjust pH levels or to eliminate cloudiness. All of these factors further bog down your body’s cells rather than help them function properly. Steam distilled water is different. In the distillation process, water is boiled and the steam created is trapped into a condenser. The condensed steam is the water you drink. The contaminants are left behind in the water that was boiled.
You’ve heard that you should drink 8 to 10 8-oz. glasses of water per day. The better rule is to drink your body weight in ounces. If you weigh 120 pounds, drink 120 ounces per day. You notice that amount is almost double the standard of 8 to 10 glasses. The first few days, your body will notice the difference. You’ll be going to the bathroom more, but eating less. Processing that much water keeps your stomach and cells occupied and you’re not as hungry.
Make your eating habits “goal-friendly.” If you consume lots of high-fat, processed or fried foods, you will definitely slow the weight loss process down. Your digestive system has to work very hard to break down these types of foods. Eat at least two raw meals/snacks a day. The live enzymes in raw food are used to break the food down on its own, without calling on your stomach’s enzymes for assistance. One raw meal or snack could simply be an apple. Your second raw meal could be a salad. Then you’ve accomplished your daily goal. Plus, there’s water in raw fruits and vegetables, so that’s a bonus.
Keep up this pace for two weeks. Eat as much food as you like–just try to keep your diet balanced. The focus here is on the water. If you are consistent in your water intake, you will notice that your elimination will improve, you will be less bloated and you should lose at least 5 lb.

Dr. Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone, recognized the health benefits of drinking water that is distilled, and claimed that its daily use prolonged his life.
